A Day on the Train: Connecting Central Java (2021)

This project is a visual odyssey that delves into the captivating journey of a loop-line railway in Central Java, Indonesia, offered by the Joglosemarkerto, one of the train services operated by the Indonesian Railway Company. Traversing across 502 kilometers and 21 cities in Central Java and Yogyakarta, this train is a lifeline for countless passengers in this province. It connects the urban hubs of Semarang, Pekalongan, Tegal, Purwokerto, Kebumen, Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Purwodadi, and finally returns to Semarang, forming a complete loop.

Inaugurated in December 2018, the Joglosemarkerto presents a remarkable solution for travelers, allowing them to embark on a single continuous journey without the hassle of changing trains. This epic voyage unfolds over approximately 12 hours, encompassing 25 train stations along the way.

The view beyond the glass revealed a dynamic tapestry of experiences, from the serene expanses of rice fields, to the stark realities of commuter life in the bustling urban hubs. This train’s relentless passage also exposed the aged and weathered charm of historic railway stations that whisper stories of a bygone era. It is a visual journey that invites viewers to witness the diverse, ever-changing landscapes this train weaves through, offering a profound glimpse into the heart of Central Java’s railway journey.
